Chargers Drop 2 at Home to Chaparrals

Playing for the first time in 10 days, the Carl Sandburg College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against DuPage on Friday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
The Chaparrals won the opener 9-0 in five innings and pulled out a 7-3 victory in nine innings in the nightcap.

The Chaparrals raced to an early 8-0 lead, scoring four times in each of the first two innings on the strength of six base hits.
Sandburg Standout
Emma Wolfe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) singled and walked in three plate appearances. She also came on in relief to retire four straight batters.

Key Moment
DuPage pushed the game to extra innings with a run in the seventh, the teams traded tallies in the eighth to make it 3-3. Placed on second to start the eighth, Sandburg’s Gabrielle Blanchard (South Pekin, Ill./Pekin) moved to third on a Kelsey Hobson (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. But the Chaparrals used three singles and a Chargers error to plate four runs in the ninth.

Maddi Benson (Spring Bay, Ill./Metamora) went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI for Sandburg. Her first-inning three-bagger brought home Wolfe, who led off with a base hit.
